Critique
Many thanks to the Committee for giving me this appointment to judge Irish Red & White Setters with Challenge Certificates for the first time. I really enjoyed my day and thought the Breed had many exhibits of good quality and pretty much all exhibits were presented in good order. Thanks also to the exhibitors for accepting my decisions in such a sporting manner. Most interesting to note that my two CC winners have the same sire and the RCC Bitch was sired by my eventual Dog CC winner too. Lovely to see the breed has some lovely quality bitches coming through which is always a good sign for the future of any breed. I highly commend the breeders for bringing this near extinct breed to this position.
VETERAN DOG (2,1)
1. Lipscombes KELLIZLOT MASTER MERCHANT. Pleasing head with correct eye shape and colour. Good pigmentation with clean finish to foreface. Ears of correct length and well placed. Strong neck leading into level topline. Deep chested with strong, well sprung ribcage.
PUPPY DOG (1.0)
1. Callaghans DALRIACH LORD OF THE ISLES FOR LAOIREBAY Really nice puppy who has lots to like about him. Excellent colour and pigmentation throughout. Pleasant head with excellent eye shape and colour. Correct ear set and length. Good over the skull. Good angulation in front with lovely forehand, just needs the rear end to catch up, as he is still to develop in quarters. Good level topline. Decent feet. Strong on the move and presents a lovely picture in profile movement, but is still at that puppy stage and is still a little loose in front movement – just needs time.
JUNIOR DOG (6,2)
These two junior boys I’m sure will do well – both quality youngsters.
1.Waltons GALLYGOB GOLD STANDARD. My notes say – very naughty but very typey. Very well made young man but still very raw. Shows lots of potential. Moved beautifully – his footfalls so correct for one so young. Correct oval bone, neat tidy feet. Good head and eye, correct length of neck into lovely lay of shoulder and excellent return of upper arm. Deep chested with well sprung ribs, carried well back. Strong quarters with good finish to croup – I liked him a lot.
2.Walkers VANDERS VA VA VOOM AVEC WROXHAM. Another quality exhibit, who just lost out to the winner on his finish to croup. So much to like and I just loved his headpiece. Everything so correct and not overdone in any way. Good eye shape and colour, lovely finish to muzzle and correct skull. Such a lovely expression. Really appealed. Lovely outline with all the essentials, strong through the quarters and moved with enthusiasm. As usual, well handled.
3. Baynes CORRANROO CROSSFIRE.
YEARLING DOG (5,2)
1. Waltons G GOLD STANDARD
2. Walkers V VA VA VOOM AVEC WROXHAM
3. Barrys RUSTASHA RED HOT RUMBA
POST GRADUATE DOG (2,1)
1 Wades OLDESTONE SNOW WIZARD Good head and expression, good in outline. Strong firm topline, strong quarters which he used to advantage on the move. Good prosternum and deep chested , correct shaped ribcage, carried well back to strong firm loin.
2.Barrys R RED HOT RUMBA Correct level topline. Excels in hind quarters with well developed first and second thighs. Good bone and feet. Deep chested with correct shaped ribcage. Would prefer more angulation through his front assembly.
LIMIT DOG (3,1)
1 & RCC Baynes CORRANROO CASANOVA So well presented and put down in excellent coat and condition. Correct colouring and pigmentation throughout. This young man certainly has that look about him that he could easily do a days work – strong and well built throughout with no exaggeration. So very well balanced fore and aft with correct amount and shape of bone, neat tidy feet. Well developed first and second thighs, deep strong ribs carried well back to strong muscular loin. Most pleasing in headpiece and good eye shape and colour. A pleasure to award him the RCC.
2. Lipscombes KELLIZLOT RIVER LEGEND Carried his topline correctly on the move. Moved steadily. Head pleasing enough with correct level planes and good eye colour. Not so good in front assembly as winner. Deep chested with well sprung ribs. Would prefer more width to hind quarters. Good enough in muscle tone.
OPEN DOG (5,2)
1 & CC Valentines SH CH & IR SH CH TULLAMORE TED JW. I have admired this dog many times ringside and it was a pleasure to have him here today looking every inch the champion. Most befitting too that he has gained his title in the native land of this breed – well done. Good all through from his front assembly, through his rib and loin to his well angulated and muscled quarters. A picture of quality and balance and epitomised with the most gorgeous head and eye – he just screams Irish Red & White Setter, so strong and well built and looks like he could easily do his job in the field. It gave me immense pleasure to award him the CC – thank you so much for bringing him.
2 Wades SH CH CASAFELICE ARIES MARINO Different type to winner but still a quality dog. Lost out to winner on his front movement. Good in outline, balanced and well built. Correct oval shaped bone, neat tidy feet. Deep chested with well sprung ribcage. Level topline with good finish to croup.
3. Davies CORRANROO CORSAIR AT ZYMORE SH CM.
VETERAN BITCH (2,0)
1 & BVIB. Barcrofts SH CH BALLAKINNISH MINUET Lovely type. So well coated and in good condition for her almost 9 years. She obviously has a lovely life. Very little to fault. Good angulation fore and aft with deep strong ribcage, carried well back to correct length of loin. Level topline still maintained on the move. Excellent finish to rear assembly – good length and set of croup. Most pleasing head and eye with correct finish to muzzle. A quality exhibit.
2. McDonalds SPYEFIRE FLAMENCO FOR ROANJORA. Most lovely headpiece as one would expect from this breeder. Good in outline however with little furnishings she was giving a lot away today. Good musculature throughout. Firm level topline, strong in rear quarters. Correct shaped oval bone, neat tidy feet. Moved well.
JUNIOR BITCH (3,0)
1.Goldsmith & Browns TANISWOOD LITTLE GEM. Very nice. Most appealing in outline, strong and so very well made. Good in angulation in front and rear. Strong, well developed hindquarters with excellent width to quarters all through. Good angulation in front with decent return of upper arm. Good in rib and good depth of brisket. Pleasant head and eye.
2 Waltons GALLYGOB GOLD CHARM. My notes say – how lovely but how naughty! However, I liked her a lot. Another from this kennel of such a lovely type. Lovely colour throughout. Good body, has all the essentials with such a lovely headpiece. Excellent balance from all angles, in strong muscle and condition. Just needs some time to learn her trade.
3.Tubbys TANISWOOD ANYTHING GOES.
YEARLING BITCH (3,0)
1 & RCC Humphries LAOIREBAY ALL THAT JAZZ AMONG SPYEFIRE JW Young but so full of quality throughout. I found her most appealing and with the most exquisite headpiece. Correct planes to head, good amount of stop and correct shape to skull. Clean in foreface – nothing overdone, most lovely. Strong neck of good length leading into well angulated shoulder and return of upper arm. Deep chested, well shaped and length of rib, carried through to strong loin. Well muscled hindquarter with correct widths to first and second thigh and good bend of stifle. Strong rear pasterns. Correct shaped quality bone and tidy feet. Moved positive and true. A pleasure to award this up and coming youngster the RCC in a quality entry.
2 Goldsmith & Browns TANISWOOD SUMMER ROSE. Another quality exhibit from this well known kennel. Just preferred the head piece of the winner. This exhibit was of excellent quality all through – but nit pic one must. A very pleasing picture in outline – her make and shape appealed. Strong build with excellent substance throughout. Good in front and rear and nicely balanced. Good in rib and good condition throughout. Move well.
3. Tubbys TANISWOOD ANYTHING GOES.
POST GRADUATE BITCH (7,2)
1. Barrys RUSTASHA RISING ROYAL Lovely outline, very appealing. Put down in excellent order throughout. Has all the essentials and moved well to win this class. Good in angulations, correct front and rear and strong rear pasterns which she used to advantage on the move. Pleasant headpiece.
2. Peacocks SPIRALWOOD SWEET MULBERRY. Such a shame she came carrying so much weight – I really liked this one but judging is on the day and she had to pay the price. Such a lovely type with excellent colouring. Her movement was true - so sound and also so stylish. Most lovely headpiece with good eye colour and shape. Strong neck and good level topline. Good through front and rear angulation.
3 Newmans TAXUS CLOUD FOREST OWL.
LIMIT BITCH (9,3)
1. Howatsons WHISPERS ABOUT VANDERS A quality exhibit as one would come to expect from this well known breeder. Loved her body shape and she is teemed with such balance from every angle. Correct angulation through her front assembly, strong ribcage, deep and carried well back to strong muscular loin. Wide quarters with correct bend of stifle and excellent in muscle tone. Lovely quality bone of the correct shape, neat tidy feet. Pleasing head. Moved with precision and strength. A quality exhibit who I considered strongly for RCC.
2. Goldsmith & Browns TANISWOOD WHOS THAT GIRL. Liked this girl a lot. She just lost out to the winner on the finish to her croup. She certainly has all the essentials and a most pleasing headpiece with correct eye colour. Good length and set on of ears and good pigmentation all through. Good bone and neat feet. Moved well.
3. Callaghans LAOIREBAY OCEAN SUNRISE. Another whom I liked for make and shape and put down in excellent condition. Just felt she was a shade heavy over the shoulder which cost her this placing but still lots to commend.
OPEN BITCH (5,1)
1 & CC & BOB. Barcrofts SH CH & IR SH CH BALLAKINNISH MISTINGUETTE CW08 CW09. I have done this bitch well before and I had no reason to change my mind about her. She exudes quality and is a real showgirl. She never put a foot wrong from the minute she entered the class, right through to BOB. She is full of type and quality and without any exaggeration or coarseness. She is well made all through with correct angulation fore and aft and put down in excellent condition with just the right amount of feathering. She is so sound on the move and her lovely temperament is displayed on the move also. A very fine example of the breed for whom I had extreme pleasure to award the CC and then on to BOB. She too has gained her title in her native land which I find most satisfying – well done to her owner/breeders. A real star.
2. Barrys SH CH SHIREOAK HURRICANE RUBY RUSTASHA (IMP) Another quality lady who just lost out today on her waistline ! Really like her and a lot of the same remarks apply. A real quality exhibit, put down in excellent coat and condition. Moved with style and precision.
3. Wards COPPERWHITE CORDELIA Liked her type and overall make and shape. She had lost her coat today which cost her in this quality competition. Sound and positive on the move.
A really enjoyable days judging – I found it most rewarding, thank you all for bringing your exhibits.
