Temperament

Irish Red and White Setters are friendly, affectionate and very people-orientated.  They form strong bonds with their families and are known for their gentle, sensitive nature, although they can be stubborn if not well trained as youngsters.  They are sociable with other dogs and enjoy being involved in all aspects of family life.

Exercise and Activity

Originally bred for stamina and endurance, this breed needs plenty of exercise to stay happy and healthy.  They excel with active families or individuals who enjoy walking, running, gundog work, agility or other dog sports.

Grooming and Care

Their silky coat is moderately easy to care for with regular brushing to prevent mats and keep it in good condition.  Pay special attention to the feathered areas and ears.

Training and Intelligence

Intelligent and eager to please, Irish Red and White Setters respond best to kind, positive training methods.  Early socialisation and consistent training help them grow into well-mannered companions. Although, without enough physical and mental stimulation your dog could become bored and destructive.
